Oshiomhole Said, ‘It Was Under Obi That the Bakassi Boys Were Running Riots in Anambra State’ — Ogene

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Afam Ogene, has challenged claims linking former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to the activities of the Bakassi Boys, saying discussions about political history should be based on verified facts.

Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Ogene responded to comments attributed to former Edo State Governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, concerning security challenges in Anambra State during Obi’s administration.

“Oshiomhole said, ‘It was under Obi that the Bakassi Boys were running riots in Anambra State,’” Ogene stated.

The lawmaker argued that the claim did not align with the historical timeline, maintaining that the activities of the Bakassi Boys predated Obi’s tenure as governor and should not be directly attributed to his administration.

Ogene stressed that political debates and evaluations of past leaders should rely on documented evidence, governance records, policies, and their responses to challenges rather than disputed narratives.

He added that historical accuracy is essential for informed public discourse, warning that misleading accounts can distort citizens’ understanding of past administrations and affect objective assessments of political leaders.
