Major General John Enenche (retd.) has said some repentant terrorists return to their former groups after completing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Enenche disclosed that he personally visited the rehabilitation camp in Gombe, where he interviewed several former terrorists.
According to him, some of the participants admitted they would return to terrorism if released without a means of livelihood. He said the responses reflected a recurring challenge that has been observed after rehabilitation.
“I have met some. I even went to their camp in Gombe and interviewed them. But unfortunately, some, under close discussion, will say, ‘Sir, even if I go back there and they release me and I have nothing doing, I will go back.’ And we have seen that replicated,” Enenche said.
Based on his assessment, the retired general argued that the current rehabilitation programme for repentant terrorists should be discontinued.
