Presidential Adviser on Foreign Affairs Demola Oshodi has urged caution in Nigeria’s response to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, citing the strong economic and historical ties between the two countries.
Speaking in remarks reported by Leadership on July 1, Oshodi said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is engaging South African authorities and international partners to prevent further violence while ensuring the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.
He said Nigeria should avoid emotional or extreme measures, noting that both countries have significant investments and shared interests that should be protected.
“There is a lot of vested interest in both countries. There’s a lot of investment in both countries, and we also have a history together. We are the two largest economies in Africa, so it is important to take things incrementally,” Oshodi said.
Oshodi maintained that a measured approach would help preserve the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa while addressing the concerns arising from the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
