The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its strike across public schools in Oyo State, directing teachers to resume work on Thursday, July 2, following renewed discussions with the state government over security concerns.
In a statement signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman Hassan Ajibola Fatai and Secretary Olukayode Salami, the union said the decision followed a directive from its national leadership after reviewing the security situation and appeals from the state government and other stakeholders.
The strike was declared after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The union said it accepted government assurances that efforts were being intensified to rescue the victims and strengthen security around schools.
Government commitments include establishing a Joint Security Task Force to patrol vulnerable schools, strengthening the Safe School Initiative, improving emergency response systems, supporting affected families, rehabilitating rescued victims, paying entitlements to families of deceased teachers, tackling criminal hideouts, enhancing intelligence gathering, deploying technology to improve school security, and ensuring the prosecution of criminal suspects.
The NUT urged teachers to remain vigilant, report security threats promptly, and reaffirmed its commitment to engaging the government until outstanding safety concerns are fully addressed.
