African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kola Ologbondiyan has criticised the Federal Government’s implementation of the fuel subsidy removal policy, saying it has imposed significant economic hardship on Nigerians without adequate relief measures.
Speaking during an interview aired on Channels Television and shared on the station’s official YouTube channel on Monday, July 6, 2026, Ologbondiyan said he supports fuel subsidy removal in principle but argued that it should have been implemented gradually to lessen its impact on citizens.
He said a phased approach would have given individuals, businesses and state governments enough time to adjust to the economic changes resulting from the reform.
Ologbondiyan noted that while state governments have benefited from increased revenue following the subsidy removal, many Nigerians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living. He questioned suggestions that citizens should seek relief from state governors, arguing that most people have little or no direct access to them.
“You can’t take all our money and give it to the governors, then expect us to go back to them for help,” he said.
He called on governments at all levels to prioritise citizens’ welfare and ensure greater accountability in the management of public funds amid the country’s economic challenges.
