Nigerian returnee Raji Nusirat has alleged that she experienced repeated harassment by police and immigration officers while living in South Africa, saying the treatment ultimately forced her to return to Nigeria.
Speaking in a video shared by Vanguard, Nusirat claimed Nigerians were frequently targeted, with even their children facing harassment in schools. She also alleged that police routinely stopped Nigerians on the streets.
Nusirat recounted being arrested one night while returning from work, despite informing officers that her immigration documents were at her apartment. She claimed the officers did not take her to a police station but instead demanded money before dropping her off partway home after her relatives raised the funds.
She also described an immigration operation at a salon, where customers presented their documents. According to Nusirat, the female officer leading the operation refused to examine the papers and instead said, “We don’t want your papers, we hate you guys, go back to your country.”
Nusirat said the incident convinced her to leave South Africa, describing it as the turning point in her decision to return home.
