Peter Obi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, says he remains committed to speaking on national issues despite repeated warnings from friends and supporters to be cautious.
Speaking during an interview on With Chude, aired on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Obi described what he called the challenges of serving as an opposition leader in Nigeria. “Everybody is saying, ‘Peter Obi, be careful,’ and I replied, ‘What is being careful?'” he said.
Obi said many people close to him have urged him to exercise caution because of his criticism of government policies and concerns for his safety. However, he insisted he would continue to speak out despite the perceived risks.
He added that leaders seeking positive change must be prepared to make personal sacrifices, saying he has told his loved ones that he will continue to do what he believes is right, even at personal cost. Obi concluded that leadership requires courage and accountability and that citizens and political opponents should be free to express their views openly.
