Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to the arrest of a South African woman allegedly caught attempting to smuggle hard drugs into Nigeria, saying the incident highlights that drug trafficking is not confined to any one nationality.
In a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Sani said Nigerians have often been blamed by many South Africans for drug-related crimes in their country, but argued that the latest arrest shows the problem is broader.
“Most people in South Africa have been pointing accusing fingers at Nigerians over drug trafficking in their country, and they may not be completely wrong. Today, a South African woman is nabbed in our country trying to smuggle hard drugs. South Africans rushed to cast the first stone on Nigerians while concealing their 5.75kg of sin,” he wrote.
His remarks followed reports that Nigerian authorities arrested a South African national allegedly attempting to smuggle 5.75 kilograms of illicit drugs into the country.
Sani acknowledged that Nigerians have been implicated in drug trafficking cases in South Africa but urged against singling out any nationality, saying the fight against transnational drug trafficking requires fairness, cooperation, and collective responsibility.
