U.S. President Donald Trump has said his administration gave Iran an opportunity to reach a deal before the recent conflict, but accused Tehran of initiating hostilities, describing the move as “a huge mistake.”
Trump made the remarks during a joint appearance with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani at the White House, according to a Fox News video posted on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The leaders discussed oil partnerships, security cooperation, and the broader situation in the Middle East.
Responding to a question about whether he regretted easing pressure on Iran by lifting a naval blockade or granting sanctions waivers, Trump said he had no regrets, insisting his administration sought a negotiated solution rather than escalation.
According to Trump, the two sides were close to reaching an agreement just two days before the conflict began, but Iranian officials withdrew at the last moment.
“We had a deal two days ago. It was done and then all of a sudden they couldn’t do it. They didn’t like something about the deal,” Trump said.
“They couldn’t do it, and they shot first and that was a big mistake that they shot first because we have been knocking the hell out of them,” he added.
Trump also referenced the decades-long tensions between the United States and Iran, including the 1979 U.S. Embassy takeover and attacks that killed or injured American troops during conflicts in the Middle East.
He claimed Iran’s military capabilities have since been significantly weakened, saying the country now possesses only a fraction of the strength it had months earlier. According to Trump, the shift has reduced regional fears of Iranian interference and created a more stable environment for neighboring countries, including Iraq.
The president further said the improved security situation has strengthened relations between Washington and Baghdad, adding that American oil companies are now expanding their operations in Iraq.
