France captain Kylian Mbappe has accepted responsibility for his team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting Spain outperformed Les Bleus both tactically and technically in their semi-final defeat.
According to the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Mbappe said France struggled to execute their game plan and allowed Spain to dictate possession and the tempo throughout the match.
Spain secured a 2-0 victory to book their place in Sunday’s World Cup final, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro scoring the goals that ended France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final.
Reflecting on the defeat, the Real Madrid forward said France’s pressing strategy failed to work, allowing Spain to play comfortably through the middle of the pitch and seize control of the contest.
Mbappe said his side’s inability to apply sustained pressure prevented them from regaining momentum during key moments of the game. He also praised Spain’s midfield pairing of Rodri and Fabián Ruiz, crediting them with controlling possession and limiting France’s influence.
He acknowledged that France spent long periods chasing the ball, making it difficult to establish midfield control or create sustained attacking pressure.
Taking responsibility as team captain, Mbappe said he accepted accountability for the disappointing result and the team’s failure to reach the final.
“As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility, and I have no problem with that,” Mbappe said. “We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go.”
