Former Department of State Services (DSS) Assistant Director Dennis Amachree has said the life imprisonment of senior Ansaru commanders Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba reflects the significant security threat they posed to Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, Amachree said the two men were not ordinary members of the terrorist group, arguing that their specialised technical skills made them particularly dangerous.
According to him, Usman and Abba possess expertise in manufacturing bombs and operating drones, capabilities he said could strengthen terrorist activities if they were released. He added that the case highlights the need for sustained intelligence gathering and robust security operations to prevent future attacks.
“They have the skills to manufacture bombs. They have the skills to pilot drones and, in fact, Ansaru itself has got a lot of new technology in its hands, so they are a set of people that you just cannot let go, and they’ve killed a lot of people because of the kind of things they are doing,” Amachree said.
He added that the convictions demonstrate the importance of using the legal process alongside security efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity.
