Former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung has questioned the significance of U.S. support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that it does not address Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.
Speaking during an interview with Trust TV, Dalung said the government should focus on tackling insecurity and other domestic issues rather than relying on international endorsements. He argued that the presence of American officials in Nigeria should have produced tangible results, particularly in areas affected by terrorism and banditry.
Dalung also criticised what he described as the United States’ lack of a strong response to past Boko Haram attacks around the Chibok axis in Borno State, where families, church leaders and other residents were abducted.
“The Americans were in Maiduguri when Boko Haram kidnapped families, church leaders and Christians in the Chibok axis and took them into the forest. We didn’t hear a reaction from the Americans,” Dalung said.
He maintained that the success of any Nigerian government would ultimately be determined by Nigerians through the ballot box, not by foreign governments. Dalung urged the Tinubu administration to prioritise resolving insecurity and other national challenges over seeking international recognition.
