National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended Cardinal John Onaiyekan following criticism over the cleric’s comments on Nigeria’s economy and governance.
According to the statement, posted on Obi’s official X account on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the former Anambra State governor said Cardinal Onaiyekan should not be criticised for speaking what he described as the truth about the country’s challenges.
Obi recalled President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome, arguing that the President had demonstrated respect for the Catholic Church during the event.
“During the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome, to demonstrate his purported commitment to and respect for the Catholic Church, President Bola Tinubu arrived in Rome days before the event,” Obi stated.
According to the statement, Obi also said Tinubu queued alongside other world leaders to greet the Pope during the inauguration. He argued that political leaders should listen to religious leaders when they raise concerns about national issues and respond by providing practical solutions rather than criticising them.:::
