Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, has highlighted key factors opposition parties must consider ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on June 9, 2026, Amadi discussed the importance of selecting a strong vice-presidential candidate and the broader electoral challenges facing opposition coalitions.
According to him, choosing a running mate is one of the most critical decisions for any presidential candidate. He said considerations should extend beyond experience and public recognition to include regional influence, political networks, and the ability to withstand intense political competition.
Assessing former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as a possible vice-presidential contender, Amadi pointed to the political realities in Rivers State and the South-South region.
He stated, “Nyesom Wike is going to be brutal, and he has the capacity to outwit him in 2027.”
Amadi noted that politics in Rivers State and the wider South-South remains highly competitive, with influential figures controlling extensive political structures and possessing significant experience in electoral mobilization. He said any candidate hoping to make gains in the region must be prepared for a tough and sophisticated political contest.
He further argued that electoral success depends not only on popularity but also on strategic organisation, coalition-building, and the ability to respond effectively to opponents. According to him, experienced politicians often rely on established networks and grassroots support to maintain their influence.
Amadi concluded that opposition parties must carefully evaluate their strategies ahead of 2027, stressing that strong leadership, effective planning, and political discipline will be crucial for any coalition seeking to challenge the ruling party.
