Anambra Native doctor granted N50m bail, barred from talking to the press over his prosecution

JusticeJude Obiora of an Anambra state High Court has granted embattled Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu JohnPaul Ezenagu, popularly known as “Mmuo Mmili Afuluanya” N50 million bail with one surety.

Other bail conditions include the deposit of the title document to his home; which would be forfeited if the defendant jumps bail, and an order not to talk to the press while the trial is going on.

One of the counsels to the defendant, Barrister Kingsley Awuka, who spoke after the court proceedings, said the court was gracious in granting the bail, and deservedly so, adding that the bail conditions are what the defendant can meet, and that they are confident that justice will take its course.

Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, is leading the prosecution, while the charges against the defendant include violation of provisions of the Anambra Homeland Security Law.

The court adjourned the matter to 3rd July for further hearing.

Ezenagu was arrested by the Anambra State Government on March 12 during a crackdown on traditionalists and native doctors suspected of preparing charms and other spiritual protections for criminals operating within the state.
