Professor Okey Ikechukwu, a professor of Strategic Management and Human Capital Development, has explained the cultural significance of late Head of State General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s frequent public appearances holding a crocodile.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Ikechukwu said the crocodile was not merely a ceremonial object but a symbol directly linked to Aguiyi-Ironsi’s name and its meaning in Igbo culture. He noted that many people have misunderstood its significance.
According to Ikechukwu, “Aguiyi” is the Igbo name for the crocodile and literally means “the leopard of the waters,” symbolising strength, authority and dominance in the aquatic environment. He contrasted it with “Agu,” another Igbo word that refers to the leopard of the forest, stressing that while both convey power and courage, they represent different environments and should not be confused.
He added that whenever Aguiyi-Ironsi appeared holding a crocodile, it simply represented his name rather than conveying a political or personal message.
“Each time General Aguiyi-Ironsi appeared holding a crocodile, people should understand that it represented his name. Aguiyi is the Igbo name for crocodile—the leopard of the waters—while Agu refers to the leopard of the forest. That is an important cultural distinction,” Ikechukwu said.
