Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has apologized to Spain midfielder Dani Olmo following an altercation after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
According to GOAL on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Ayala said emotions got the better of him after the final whistle. He claimed Olmo made a remark that provoked his reaction but acknowledged that, as a coach, he should have remained composed.
“Obviously I’m sorry. Because of my position, I can’t allow a feeling, or what I might receive from the other party, to change my mood and my actions,” Ayala said.
He disputed reports that he punched Olmo, insisting it was “more of a push than anything else,” and added that he would apologize to the Spain international in person if they meet again.
Ayala said he initially entered the pitch to separate players involved in a confrontation but admitted the situation escalated amid heightened emotions. He described the incident as regrettable and accepted responsibility for his actions.
The post-match clash reportedly involved several players from both teams, including Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Eric Garcia and Gavi. FIFA has opened an investigation into the incidents following Spain’s extra-time victory, secured by Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner.
