Lawyer Maxwell Opara has said foreign governments are unlikely to intervene in Nigeria’s domestic political issues if doing so could affect their diplomatic relations with the country.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Opara made the remarks while reacting to reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar engaged a United States lobbying firm to advance his position in the US.
Drawing on his experience in legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu, Opara argued that countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States prioritize their national and strategic interests over the internal political affairs of other nations.
“Now let me tell you, I got to know these guys very well, these foreigners, in the course of doing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s matter, and in one of their judgments there in the UK, they said that anything that will affect their bilateral relationship with Nigeria, they won’t go into it. These guys are interested in their own. So if you are waiting for them to come and resolve our problem here, you are just wasting your time,” Opara said.
He maintained that Nigeria’s political challenges should be resolved through its own institutions rather than relying on foreign governments to intervene.
