Barcelona have reportedly identified Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal as a leading alternative in their search for a new striker if a move for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez proves unattainable.
According to Barca Universal, Álvarez remains Barcelona’s preferred target. However, the Catalan club is exploring backup options amid Atlético Madrid’s reluctance to part with the Argentine international.
Oyarzabal has reportedly been added to Barcelona’s summer transfer shortlist, with his release clause believed to be set at €75 million. While the fee is significant, it is viewed as more attainable than the valuations attached to several other elite attacking targets.
The 29-year-old Spain international is valued for his versatility, having excelled across multiple attacking positions. He is also known for his intelligent movement, disciplined pressing, and consistent output in the final third.
Barcelona believe those qualities could fit well into coach Hansi Flick’s plans to build a more dynamic and aggressive attack. Oyarzabal’s extensive La Liga experience and familiarity with several Barcelona players through the Spanish national team are also seen as advantages.
Despite Oyarzabal’s appeal, Álvarez remains the club’s top priority. Barcelona are expected to carefully assess the financial implications of any deal, particularly given Oyarzabal’s age and €75 million release clause, with a lower negotiated fee potentially making the move more attractive.
