Media entrepreneur and politician Dele Momodu has claimed that former President Muhammadu Buhari initially opposed President Bola Tinubu’s emergence ahead of the 2023 presidential election, alleging that divisions within the former administration contributed to the crisis involving former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele.
Speaking in an interview on Nevon HQ on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Momodu said information available to him suggested Buhari, Emefiele and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami were aligned in opposing Tinubu’s presidential ambition.
“In the last election, my information is that Buhari did not initially want Tinubu at all. That’s what led Emefiele into the crisis he found himself because him, Buhari and the Attorney General (Malami)… were in the same clique that didn’t want Tinubu,” Momodu said.
He added that Tinubu nevertheless emerged victorious, describing him as “a child of destiny,” while also expressing the opinion that the President had “mismanaged that opportunity given to him by God.”
Momodu presented the remarks as information available to him and his personal opinion. He did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims during the interview.
