Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has defended the actions of the Eighth Senate after an X user recalled its response to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s withdrawal of $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) to purchase military equipment.
In a post shared on Saturday, July 4, 2026, the X user stated that the Saraki-led Senate criticized the withdrawal as unconstitutional because it was made without prior appropriation by the National Assembly.
Responding on his official X account, Saraki said the Senate acted in line with due process during his tenure.
“History will be the judge of whether we got every call right. But I remain proud that we showed Nigerians that the National Assembly can stand on its own feet and has a role to play in moving Nigeria forward,” he wrote.
Saraki’s remarks came after the earlier post resurfaced online, reviving discussion over the Eighth Senate’s handling of the controversial withdrawal from the Excess Crude Account for military procurement.
