Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is pushing to sign Granit Xhaka, but the club’s owners remain divided over the proposed move because of the midfielder’s age and transfer fee, according to The Chelsea Chronicles.
Alonso, who previously worked with Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen, reportedly believes the Switzerland international would add much-needed experience and leadership to a Chelsea squad that has endured inconsistent seasons.
Reports claim Xhaka has agreed personal terms with Chelsea, although he declined to discuss his future after Switzerland’s World Cup victory over Algeria.
Negotiations with Sunderland, Xhaka’s reported club, remain ongoing, with Chelsea yet to meet the club’s valuation. The London side’s latest offer is said to be well below the asking price, leaving talks at an impasse.
Journalist Luca Cerchione reported that Alonso is determined to complete the transfer, while Chelsea’s board is reluctant to spend around £25 million on a player in his thirties. The club’s recent recruitment strategy has focused on younger talent, but Chelsea are also believed to recognise the need for experienced leaders as Alonso begins his tenure.
