Kaduna-based legal practitioner Al-Zubayr Abubakar has alleged that Nigeria’s major institutions are becoming increasingly influenced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, raising concerns about their independence.
Speaking in an interview on JKD TV, Abubakar argued that public institutions, including security agencies and the judiciary, should serve all Nigerians impartially rather than appear aligned with any political leader. He said perceptions that law enforcement responds more quickly to matters involving the President or his administration could weaken public confidence.
Abubakar also questioned the judiciary’s independence, warning that doubts over the courts’ ability to handle politically sensitive cases fairly could discourage citizens from seeking legal remedies. He added that democracy depends on institutions operating without bias and treating all political actors equally.
“To make matters worse, the judges, who are supposed to stand for justice, have all been brought under his influence. So if you have a legal case, would you truly have the confidence to take it to court? How can the police treat opposition parties fairly?” Abubakar said.
