Chelsea remain in active negotiations with Crystal Palace over the signing of defender Maxence Lacroix, with growing confidence that a deal can be reached, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
In an update published on July 22, 2026, Romano said talks between the two clubs are progressing positively, with direct negotiations continuing as Chelsea seek to strengthen their defence ahead of the 2026/27 season under head coach Xabi Alonso.
A key factor boosting Chelsea’s optimism is Lacroix’s reported desire to move to Stamford Bridge. The 26-year-old French centre-back is said to be keen on joining the Blues, who view him as a priority defensive target because of his pace, physicality, and suitability for a high defensive line.
The update came shortly after Chelsea confirmed Alejandro Garnacho’s season-long loan move to Aston Villa, which includes an obligation to buy.
While the clubs are still negotiating the financial terms of the transfer, Chelsea are hopeful an agreement can be reached before the transfer window closes. Lacroix has attracted interest from several clubs after impressing at Crystal Palace, but Chelsea are currently leading the race for his signature.
