England midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted the high altitude in Mexico affected him during the team’s final training session ahead of their FIFA World Cup round-of-16 clash but insisted it would not serve as an excuse.
Speaking after England’s final workout at Pumas’ “Quarry” training facility, Henderson said the squad initially felt the effects of the 2,400-metre altitude, including during routine activities around the team hotel, but gradually adapted as training progressed.
England arrived in Toluca on Friday evening to allow players two nights to acclimatise before the knockout fixture at the Azteca Stadium. Head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that full adaptation in such a short period was impossible and noted that Mexico held a natural advantage because of their familiarity with the conditions. He also revealed he experienced minor symptoms, including a slight headache and difficulty sleeping.
Despite the challenges, Henderson said England’s focus remains on its preparation and performance rather than environmental conditions.
The midfielder added that the squad is determined to work together, adapt to the circumstances and represent England with pride as it seeks a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
