actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has urged people to consider financial compatibility when choosing romantic partners, saying similar economic backgrounds can help reduce conflict in relationships.
According to a report by The Sun published on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Makinwa made the remarks during an episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. She said significant differences in income and spending habits often create misunderstandings, particularly when couples have conflicting lifestyle expectations.
Makinwa argued that while love is essential, financial compatibility plays a crucial role in how couples manage daily life, including spending priorities and shared responsibilities. She added that some men pursue women whose lifestyles exceed their financial capacity and later complain that the women are materialistic, despite those expectations existing from the outset.
According to her, many relationship challenges could be avoided if people were realistic about their finances and chose partners with similar lifestyles and economic capacity.
“I am a big believer of dating within your age and within your class. That way there will not be stories that touch,” Makinwa said.
