African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Kola Ologbondiyan has criticised the Federal Government’s handling of fuel subsidy removal, arguing that a phased approach would have reduced the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians.
Speaking in an interview aired on Channels Television on Monday, July 6, 2026, Ologbondiyan said he still supports former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 campaign position that fuel subsidies should be removed gradually rather than abruptly.
“I still hold on to Atiku’s campaign in 2023, in which he clearly stated that the subsidy should be withdrawn but must be phased,” he said.
Ologbondiyan argued that the economic shock affecting many Nigerians could have been mitigated if the government had adopted a gradual implementation strategy. He said previous administrations handled the sensitive issue with greater caution to allow citizens time to adjust.
He added that current economic conditions have placed significant pressure on households and public institutions, urging the government to review its economic policies and encourage broader policy debates. According to him, Nigerians will ultimately judge any administration by its ability to manage the economy and improve citizens’ welfare.
