President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Armed Forces through the adoption of emerging technologies and enhanced operational capabilities to address the country’s security challenges.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the closing ceremony of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Tinubu said the government would strengthen the military’s capacity across all battle spaces. He also announced plans to revitalise the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to boost local arms production, create jobs and reduce dependence on foreign military supplies.
The event, themed “Protecting the People and Serving the Nation,” also featured remarks by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, who disclosed that more than 80 per cent of Nigerian troops are currently engaged in active operations. He assured Nigerians that the Army remains prepared to confront threats from insurgency, banditry and cross-border terrorism, including emerging risks from the Sahel region.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Army’s progress in technology and manpower development while advocating improved welfare for personnel. Former Heads of State Olusegun Obasanjo and Yakubu Gowon, alongside military chiefs from several African countries, attended the ceremony, which featured land and aerial combat demonstrations.
