Lamido Sanusi has criticised the National Assembly, accusing lawmakers of failing to carry out effective oversight of the executive, particularly regarding government borrowing.
Speaking during an interview on TV Platinum on June 25, 2026, Sanusi questioned the legislature’s role under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, arguing that lawmakers failed to enforce borrowing limits contained in laws they had approved.
According to Sanusi, the law prohibits lending beyond five per cent of the previous year’s revenue, but he alleged that the provision was repeatedly violated without legislative intervention.
“The National Assembly was the one that passed the law. The law said you cannot lend more than 5% of last year’s revenue. That law was broken with impunity. Where was the National Assembly, where was the oversight?” he said.
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria contrasted the scrutiny he faced while leading the apex bank with what he described as lawmakers’ silence during the previous administration.
“I was called before the National Assembly more than 20 times on every small matter. I was called and harassed and disturbed, and all of a sudden, for eight years the National Assembly was silent,” Sanusi added.
