‘It’s Tinubu’s Fault’ — Courtroom Erupts as Suspect Blames Economic Hardship for Alleged Crime

A courtroom session drew widespread attention after a suspect attributed his alleged criminal conduct to Nigeria’s economic hardship, prompting laughter in court and sparking debate online.

According to a report by LEADERSHIP Newspaper on June 25, 2026, the incident was captured in a viral video showing the suspect pleading for leniency before a judge. Speaking in Igbo, he asked for forgiveness and promised not to repeat the alleged offence.

“Please forgive me. I will not do it again. It is Tinubu’s fault,” the suspect said, referring to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His remarks reportedly drew laughter from court officials, lawyers and others present in the courtroom.

The video has since generated mixed reactions on social media. Some users viewed the comment as a humorous reflection of the economic pressures facing many Nigerians, while others argued that hardship cannot justify criminal behaviour.

Among those reacting, Engr Benjamin Chukwemeka wrote, “Make una release the young man,” while Ken Ilongwo commented, “Tinubu do this one ooo.” Others disagreed, with Seun Felious stating, “A thief is a thief,” and Allen Jobbo arguing that the incident highlighted deeper societal concerns.

The identity of the suspect and the nature of the alleged offence were not disclosed. However, the incident has fueled renewed discussion about economic hardship, accountability and personal responsibility in Nigeria.
