A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has questioned the effectiveness of the proposed state police, arguing that it would neither resolve Nigeria’s security challenges nor strengthen the country’s democratic system.
According to Daily Post on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Galadima made the remarks during an interview on the ARISE News Morning Show while discussing the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026.
The bill, recently passed by the National Assembly and transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly, requires approval from at least two-thirds of the legislatures to advance in the constitutional amendment process.
Galadima argued that creating another police structure would not automatically improve security and urged authorities to focus on addressing the challenges facing existing security institutions. He also warned that state police could be used by governors to intimidate opposition parties and political rivals, particularly ahead of the 2027 general election.
“If the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian military cannot solve security situations in Nigeria, I wonder how the state police would be able to do that,” he said.
