Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain and House of Representatives aspirant Maxwell Opara has expressed concern over declining interest in military careers, attributing the trend to poor welfare, economic hardship and inadequate support for security personnel.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV on Monday, July 6, 2026, Opara said military and police service were once regarded as honourable career paths but argued that public perception has changed because of current economic conditions and concerns about the welfare of security personnel.
“If you pick up a form to join the Army, your entire family will hold a meeting over it,” Opara said, describing what he believes is the growing reluctance of families to encourage military service.
He called on the government to improve the welfare, working conditions and equipment available to security personnel, arguing that better support would boost morale and strengthen Nigeria’s security institutions.
Opara also urged greater investment in the welfare of serving and retired security personnel, saying comprehensive reforms are needed to make public service more attractive to young Nigerians and enhance national security.
