Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has urged public figures who spoke out during the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to also acknowledge their successful rescue.
In a post shared on his X account on Sunday, Omokri argued that those who criticised the government’s handling of the incident have a moral obligation to give similar attention to the victims’ release.
“Public figures who politicised the abduction of the Oriire children owe those brave kids a moral duty to have also publicised their rescue,” he wrote.
He questioned the silence of some public figures following the rescue, stating: “Their silence is not golden. If you condemned Nigeria when there was a breakdown, shouldn’t you also commend the country you claim to love when there is a breakthrough?”
Omokri further urged celebrities and other influential Nigerians to use their platforms responsibly, writing, “There is a common slogan: ‘Drink responsibly.’ Perhaps we need a new one: ‘Use your celebrity responsibly!'”
He concluded by praying for the country, saying, “May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” His remarks come amid continued public debate over the rescue operation and the role of public figures in responding to national events.
