Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has dismissed speculation of divisions within the ruling junta, insisting he remains the country’s sole leader.
According to a Vanguard report published on July 22, 2026, Traoré made the remarks while addressing community leaders in Ouahigouya, declaring, “There can’t be two captains on one ship.” He warned that anyone who undermines his leadership would be removed without hesitation, adding that there are “no strongmen” around him.
His comments come amid growing speculation over the prolonged absence of two senior junta figures—intelligence chief Oumarou Yabré and Rapid Intervention Battalion commander Farouk Azaria Sorgho—fueling reports of possible internal tensions.
According to AFP, Yabré has not been seen publicly since late May, while Sorgho has also been absent from official events. Security sources further claimed that some of their associates have been arrested or removed from office.
The military government has not officially confirmed reports of a power struggle within the ruling junta.
