Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly criticised an acting director over the absence of senior officials at a project flag-off ceremony in Abuja, warning that performance and commitment would determine future appointments.
Speaking at the event, Wike expressed displeasure over the non-attendance of several directors, particularly the Acting Director of Development Control. He directed the Acting Head of Service to convey a warning to the official and stressed that officers serving in acting capacities must demonstrate accountability if they hope to secure substantive appointments.
The minister also cautioned public servants against relying on labour unions or strike actions to avoid responsibility, insisting that government officials must remain committed to their duties.
In addition, Wike ordered development control authorities to intensify enforcement against illegal structures across the FCT, directing that buildings erected on improperly allocated land be demolished.
Delivering a pointed warning, Wike noted that the absent official’s family members were likely watching the live broadcast.
“I’m sure his wife, his children, his parents are hearing it now because this is on live television. Let the wife hear, let the children hear, let the parents hear. If he does not do what we said, he knows what will happen,” he said.
The remarks underscore the FCT administration’s emphasis on discipline, accountability, and enforcement of development regulations.
