Lawyer Maxwell Opara has criticised the heavy security presence surrounding activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore’s court appearance, describing the deployment as excessive and unnecessary.
Speaking to Channels Television on June 24, 2026, Opara questioned the scale of armed security personnel escorting Sowore from Kuje Correctional Centre to court following the revocation of his bail and subsequent remand.
Addressing security operatives outside the courtroom, Opara expressed concern over the level of force deployed around the proceedings.
“What is all this madness? Are you people not ashamed of yourselves? Look at the kind of ammunition you brought to court because of Sowore,” he said.
The lawyer argued that the extensive security arrangement was disproportionate to the circumstances and created an atmosphere of intimidation around what he described as a routine court appearance.
Security officials maintained a strong presence within and around the court complex as Sowore was brought to the venue under armed escort. The measures were put in place to control access and ensure order during the proceedings.
Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, is currently facing an ongoing legal dispute involving the Department of State Services (DSS) and was remanded in Kuje prison pending further court hearings.
