Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore says successive Nigerian administrations have repeatedly accused him of working for their political opponents whenever he criticises those in power.
Speaking during an interview on PAPShow on Sunday, July 19, 2026, Sowore rejected claims that he acts on behalf of politicians or foreign interests, insisting his activism has always been independent and focused on accountability, good governance and the fight against corruption.
He recalled that in 2015, supporters of former President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly claimed he was working for Muhammadu Buhari because of his criticism of the Jonathan administration. According to Sowore, the narrative changed after Buhari assumed office.
“By 2019, Buhari’s people said, ‘I am working for Atiku Abubakar,'” he said, arguing that such allegations are designed to distract the public from the issues he raises.
Sowore added that similar accusations have followed him since his days as a student activist, describing them as a tactic to discredit outspoken critics and discourage scrutiny of those in authority. He maintained that he has never served the interests of any political leader and urged Nigerians to judge public debates based on evidence rather than political propaganda or unverified claims.
