Israeli forces carried out a large controlled detonation in the southern Lebanese town of Kfar Tebnit, expanding a series of heavy explosive operations despite an active United States-brokered ceasefire, according to Al Jazeera English.
The blast shook Kfar Tebnit and neighbouring villages in the Nabatieh district, coming days after similar detonations near the UNESCO-listed Beaufort Castle. Israeli officials said military engineering units used hundreds of tons of explosives to destroy underground tunnel networks and infrastructure allegedly maintained by Hezbollah.
The explosions sent shockwaves through nearby residential areas, shattering windows and raising concerns about possible structural damage to heritage sites. Lebanon’s Culture Ministry warned that the military demolitions could threaten the Crusader-era Beaufort Castle, which is listed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger.
The latest operation highlights the fragile security situation along the border. Although a US-mediated ceasefire framework remains in place, Israeli forces continue to maintain positions in parts of southern Lebanon.
Lebanese authorities have renewed calls for a full Israeli withdrawal to enable the Lebanese Armed Forces to deploy across the south, while residents report continued surveillance, artillery shelling and demolition activities in frontier communities.
