The Federal Government has evacuated 266 more Nigerians from South Africa amid ongoing anti-migrant protests in the country.
One of the returnees, Chikweze Igwe, said hostility toward foreigners made his 13-year stay in South Africa increasingly difficult.
Speaking to Arise TV, Igwe said, “I’ve been in South Africa for 13 years now. Their problem is that they don’t like foreigners. They are always threatening us. If you are working, they rob you. If you are in your house, the police come for you. If you are outside, they come for you. Anywhere you are, whatever you are doing, they are threatening you. They say, ‘Go back to your country.'”
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it is providing secure transportation for the returnees to their home states or the nearest transit points. The agency added that it is profiling the evacuees to assess their vulnerabilities and skills as part of plans to provide long-term support, including assistance for those without vocational skills.
