Dr. Bashir Kurfi, Convener of the Katsina Community Security Initiative, has called for greater focus on the logistics networks that support banditry, arguing that disrupting arms supply chains is critical to addressing insecurity in northwestern Nigeria.
Speaking on Trust TV on June 24, 2026, Kurfi said security efforts often concentrate on armed groups while overlooking the individuals who supply them with weapons, ammunition, and other resources.
Citing a recent court case, Kurfi referred to the conviction of a woman allegedly caught transporting ammunition intended for Audu Lankai, whom he described as one of the region’s most notorious bandit leaders operating around Jibia Local Government Area.
“I have seen news that a lady caught with ammunition in Kaduna was sentenced to death by the Kaduna High Court,” Kurfi said. “And this lady wanted to take the ammunition to Audu Lankai in Jibia, and Audu Lankai is one of the biggest bandits.”
According to Kurfi, the case highlights the role of hidden supply networks in sustaining criminal activities. He urged authorities to intensify intelligence-led operations targeting arms traffickers, financial couriers, fuel suppliers, and informants who support armed groups.
Kurfi maintained that cutting off the flow of weapons and ammunition would significantly weaken the operational capacity of bandit groups and strengthen ongoing efforts to restore security in the region.
