Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticised what he described as the extensive security presence surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, drawing attention to the issue amid ongoing discussions about the detention of activist Omoyele Sowore and the treatment of dissenting voices in Nigeria.
Adeyanju, known for his advocacy on civil liberties and governance, questioned what he sees as a disproportionate deployment of state security resources. He contrasted the level of protection afforded to the president with the treatment of activists and protesters, arguing that the balance between security and democratic freedoms remains a matter of public concern.
Speaking on the issue, Adeyanju said, “Look at the amount of security mobilization DSS, they even guided him (Tinubu) to the toilet.”
The remarks quickly generated debate across political and social circles. Supporters of Adeyanju argued that while protecting public officials is important, authorities must also safeguard citizens’ rights to free expression and peaceful protest.
Others defended the security arrangements, maintaining that the president’s position requires extensive protection, particularly in light of Nigeria’s security challenges.
The comments have renewed discussions about accountability, civil liberties, and the balance between ensuring public safety and protecting democratic rights in Nigeria.
