Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler Asari Dokubo has revealed why he declined an opportunity to study in the United States despite his father’s encouragement.
In a video shared on Facebook on Saturday, July 18, 2026, Dokubo reflected on his upbringing, personal convictions and key decisions that shaped his life. He recalled that his father offered to send him to the United States for his education, but he rejected the proposal because he believed it was not the right path for him.
“My father asked me to go to America for school, and I replied, ‘No, I’m not going,’” Dokubo said, adding that his decision was based on his personal beliefs rather than external expectations.
He said life presents people with opportunities that require difficult choices, and those decisions can have lasting consequences. While acknowledging that studying abroad is widely regarded as a valuable opportunity, Dokubo maintained that remaining true to one’s convictions is more important than following societal expectations.
He urged young Nigerians to make thoughtful decisions about their education, careers and future, stressing that success depends not only on where a person studies but also on determination, discipline and the willingness to make meaningful contributions to society.
