Nigeria has achieved its strongest performance in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with 24 universities earning places in the global rankings—the country’s highest representation since it began participating.
The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos led the Nigerian institutions, both placing in the 801–1000 global band. Bayero University, Covenant University and Landmark University were ranked in the 1001–1200 band.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings assess universities across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality and impact, international outlook, and industry engagement.
Education stakeholders have described the result as a major milestone for Nigeria’s higher education sector, saying it reflects the growing international recognition of the country’s universities. They added that the increased number of ranked institutions could strengthen Nigeria’s global academic reputation, attract more international partnerships and support greater investment in research and innovation.
