Human rights lawyer and legal consultant Maxwell Opara has defended former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, criticizing Senator Adams Oshiomhole over remarks questioning Obi’s record in public office.
Speaking in a video published on the official SYMFONI YouTube channel on Monday, July 6, 2026, Opara argued that Obi’s performance as governor, particularly his fiscal management, speaks for itself.
“Oshiomhole has the audacity to talk about someone who left office with a huge amount of money and without any debt in Anambra State,” Opara said.
He maintained that Obi’s tenure remains a notable example of fiscal discipline, arguing that politicians with contested records should not criticize leaders whose financial management continues to receive public attention.
Opara also said many Nigerian states have struggled because outgoing administrations leave behind heavy debts and depleted treasuries, placing financial burdens on their successors and slowing development.
He added that Nigerian voters are becoming more informed and increasingly assess the records of political leaders before making electoral decisions. Rather than engaging in personal attacks, Opara urged politicians to focus on practical policies and development plans capable of improving governance and the economy, stressing that accountability and prudent management of public resources should remain key standards for evaluating public office holders.
