Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has said the late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, the elder brother of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political development and mentored several prominent politicians, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview on Creative Lord TV on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Sani said many Nigerians are familiar with the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua but know little about the political influence of his elder brother.
“People don’t know the elder brother of Yar’Adua. But President Yar’Adua has an elder brother who was the godfather of Tinubu and godfather of Atiku,” Sani said.
According to the former lawmaker, the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua was one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, whose mentorship and extensive political network helped shape the careers of several national leaders.
Sani argued that the elder Yar’Adua’s contributions to building political alliances and nurturing future leaders are often overlooked in discussions about Nigeria’s political history.
He added that understanding the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy requires recognizing the role played by influential figures who worked behind the scenes to develop political leadership and strengthen democratic institutions.
