A 35-year-old woman, Nwoko Gift, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old niece and househelp, Miss Ebo Chimamanda, with a knife in Umuahia, according to a Facebook post by the Abia State Police Command on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka said the suspect, who is from Ehimembano in Imo State, resides at IBB Housing Estate in Umuahia with the victim.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly attacked the girl after she refused to spread clothes before the suspect left for the market. Police also alleged that the victim had been subjected to repeated physical abuse and death threats.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters rescued the victim, arrested the suspect and recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The Abia State Police Command condemned the incident and urged residents to promptly report cases of abuse and other suspicious activities to help protect vulnerable members of the community and enhance public safety.
