Social media users have reacted to comments made by former Anambra State governor Peter Obi following the remand of activist Omoyele Sowore in Kuje prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement posted on his official X account on June 23, 2026, Obi stressed the importance of protecting democratic values and civil liberties, arguing that a healthy democracy should not rely on suppressing dissenting voices.
He also urged authorities to safeguard Sowore’s rights while cautioning against actions that could heighten tensions in a country already facing significant security and economic challenges.
“Moreover, our society is already strained by insecurity and biting economic hardship. Therefore, deliberate steps should be taken, even by the courts, to avoid inflaming the situation,” Obi stated.
The remarks sparked mixed reactions online. While some users supported Obi’s call for the protection of fundamental rights and freedom of expression, others questioned the circumstances surrounding Sowore’s case and the court’s decision.
The debate has renewed discussions about the balance between law enforcement, judicial processes, and the preservation of democratic freedoms in Nigeria.
