Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has backed new signing Andrey Santos to become an important player for the club but warned fans not to expect an immediate impact from the Brazilian midfielder.
According to Metro, Manchester United have agreed an initial £48 million deal with Chelsea for the 22-year-old as they continue strengthening their midfield ahead of the new season.
Ferdinand believes Santos has the potential to develop into a top-class player but does not expect him to instantly replace Casemiro or become an automatic starter.
“Is he the player who is going to replace Casemiro? I don’t think he can step straight into that role and perform at that level immediately,” Ferdinand said.
The former England defender added that Santos could eventually form a long-term midfield partnership with Kobbie Mainoo but insisted United still need more reinforcements in the position.
Ferdinand said the club may need two or three additional midfield options to share the responsibility and provide greater balance to the squad.
While praising Santos’ qualities and potential, he urged supporters to remain patient as the Brazilian adapts to the pressure and expectations of playing for Manchester United.
