Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi has urged the Senate to adopt a stronger response to reported xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, citing the killing of a Nigerian man during the violence.
Speaking in a video published by TV Platinum on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Ningi described the alleged attack, saying the victim was chased from his home and killed by a mob before being burned.
“This attack is not done by mouth; it is done physically. You imagine, Mr. President, somebody in his own house, somebody in his own place of business, without any notice, and the mobs begin to chase that man, kill him, burn him,” Ningi said.
The senator told lawmakers that the incident was not isolated, claiming that more than 1,200 Nigerians were being evacuated as the violence spread. He argued that expressions of concern alone were insufficient and called for a review of Nigeria’s foreign policy toward South Africa, including a downgrade in diplomatic relations.
Ningi said the Senate has a responsibility to protect Nigerians both at home and abroad and urged the government to take stronger measures to safeguard its citizens.
