Since I Came to Lagos I Didn’t Have Work, I Sold My Clothes, Phone and I Sleep in Bus Stops — Robinson

A Lagos resident, David Robinson, has narrated how he has been forced to sleep at bus stops after struggling to secure employment and accommodation since arriving in the city about a year ago.

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Robinson said he left his ageing mother in Benin City in search of better opportunities but has been unable to find stable work in Lagos.

He explained that he has survived mainly by carrying loads but eventually had to sell his clothes and phone due to hardship, leaving him with no place to stay.

“Since I came to Lagos I did not have any work. So I decided to be carrying load to survive. I sold my clothes and my phone. So I don’t have where to sleep and I sleep in bus stops,” he said.

His situation highlights the worsening housing and unemployment challenges in Lagos, where rising living costs continue to push vulnerable residents into sleeping in public spaces such as bus stops and markets.

Observers and experts have warned that without urgent intervention in affordable housing, job creation, and social support systems, more residents may be pushed into similar conditions across major urban centres.
